OFF THE WALL: A SUBTLETY OR THE MARVELOUS SUGAR BABY BY KARA WALKER

Photographs by Justin Fulton

Located in the cavernous buildings left behind by the Domino Sugar Factory, Kara Walker has brought light to the decades of repression that had never left walls of the now abandoned buildings. The very grain that once drove the Williamsburg factory is now standing over 30 feet high, covering a female sphinx, a powerful icon paying homage to the cruel conditions factory workers faced in a harsh 19th century reality.
