PERFORMA 13: RAINER GANAHL “COMME des MARXISTS”

Citing Karl Marx and the symbol of the hammer and sickle as a contemporary analysis of how capitalism works, New York based artist Rainer Ganahl presented Comme des Marxists last night at White Columns in the West Village. The performance, in collaboration with NYC’s city-wide performance art festival Performa 13, included an extensive runway show of Ganahl’s own designs and featured the categories “Marx 4 Kids”, “There is only one Karl” and “Marx Hermès” amongst others. The performance was more conversational than critical in tone, and injected humor into Ganahl’s connections between class struggle, politics, design, and consumerism. White Columns will be displaying Ganahl’s designs, as well as video coverage of the runway show in a week-long instillation through November 9th.
